This project started life as access to re-bed coping stones and repair split or damaged window heads. Investigation by council engineers revealed possible structural weakness in the steel frame and a programme of remedial work was put together starting with the tower and finishing with the temporary roof over the north side lower roof. We were unable to found scaffolding on the roof when we scaffolded the tower so employed 1m deep aluminium beams spanning from Mansfield Road to the car park at the rear (around 25m) with further beams front and rear so that all elevations of the scaffold were clear of the roof and the massive loads were being transferred down to ground level. The temporary roof was another engineering triumph being supported by a massive scaffold frame and 90 tonnes of kentledge.
